Time Is The Currency Of Success

Time is the Currency of Success

By Dale Gillham.

Time is money – it’s a phrase we’ve all heard countless times, but what does it really mean? Once you learn to place value on each and every hour in the day, you’ll discover a new level of productivity and success that will unlock growth like you’ve never experienced before.

Consider Malcolm Gladwell’s 10,000 hour theory; Gladwell purports that it takes 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to truly master a skill. Plenty has been said about how accurate this rule really is, but whether Gladwell hit the nail on the head or not, the key question raised by his thesis is one that we should all attempt to answer; are we spending our time deliberately and intelligently?

Time is a currency. You can choose what you want to spend it on in the same way that you choose how you spend your pay cheque. When we consider time as a currency, we all sit on a level playing field. Every single one of us lives a 24 hour day. Most of us work for 8 hours and sleep for 8 hours. That leaves us with 8 hours to play with. What can you achieve if you invest this time deliberately?

Make the most of your day by investing in some “me time” to rejuvenate yourself. According to the Australian Psychological Society’s Stress and Wellbeing Survey, the five most effective ways of managing stress are: watching TV or movies, spending time with family and friends, focusing on the positives, listening to music, and reading. With an 80 per cent effectiveness, there’s no harm in setting aside a few hours each night to unwind and reset for the next busy day ahead.

So which part of yourself do you want to upgrade? Is professional growth the aim? Perhaps you need to invest in your relationships with others? Regardless of your desired outcome, the route to growth is the same; invest the time.

Alongside de-stressing, one must be accountable for their time in order to achieve success. Try placing a monetary value on some of your off-time. Start by building a career timeline and breaking down your free hours into success progression hours. Is your goal to start your first share portfolio? Then get learning. Knowledge is power, always and pipedreams will remain just that without effort and accountability for your time.

We all have the same bank balance; 24 hours. How will you invest it?
